Taster's Notes
Very rarely does a wine leave us speechless, but Segona Plenitud 1996 is one of them. We first came across this wine in the Recaredo wine cellars in February, when Ton Mata revealed that they were going to put it in the market, “a tribute to time and to the territory”, in his own words. This wine is dedicated to Josep i Antoni Matas, the second generation of the Recaredo family, a family devoted to wine making over six decades. It is composed of 80% xarel.lo and 20% chardonnay grapes, grown in one slope next to River Bitlles, in the county of Alt Penedès. The second tasting, in the month of July, confirmed what we could see early that same year, but in this tasting, we could also compare the top-rated sparkling wines of the year and thus notice that this wine had a different brightness, its quality being far above the ordinary; for this reason, we gave it 99 points.
Not very often does a wine leave us lost for words, Segona Plenitud 1996 was one of them.
The 1996 vintage
was relatively fresh, rainfall being higher than average levels in the region.
The vintage was bottled in March 1998, while the xarel.lo aged 10 months in oak
casks. Once bottled, this wine aged with cork stopper; ageing could have ruined
it but instead it provided this wine with exceptional finesse and an
outstanding subtle touch. Obviously, its tertiary tints are dominant, with
aromas of toast, hazelnuts, toasted bread, spices, crema catalana (crème
brûlée) and a wealth of memories adapted to each consumer. Its sparkle is
delicate but steady, crackling in the mouth and it has a long finish, with a
very slight bitterness and a greasing feeling that envelopes the mouth.
We have always
considered Recaredo cellars as one of the flagships of Cava, as its
sparkles show a more Catalan way of production, thanks to their brilliant work
in brut nature (dryer) and notably thanks to their dedication vested by this
cellar on each vineyard.
